I have like ten minutes before my mother wrests control of the internet away from me, but [livejournal.com profile] ericaplease went ahead and posted her original fic after I said I'd post mine if she would, SO NOW I HAVE TO. Oh no. I am embarrassed. But I promised. So expect that.

For any of you that read that New York Times Article on the Netherlands last week, you know that the shops all close insanely early here. In fact there's one day a week where the grocery store is open past six, so that people can shop after work. It's called Koopavond.

Well, today I discovered that Koopavond is not let's go shopping, oh what fun avond but rather alcoholics-unite-avond. Seriously. The only people in the store were clearly alcoholics. This country is so nuts. Lovably so, but still, NUTS.

Some of you asked for postcards and I was terribly remiss in actually buying those, but I figured I could show you the place I was running around for ten days. My grandparents live in Amerfoort which was established in A.D. 1259 and is about forty-five minutes away from Amsterdam by train.

It's undergoing planned expansion right now by the government, but when my grandparents moved to Amerfoort from Heerjansdam (a village established sometime before the 12th century) when my mother was 14 it was all farmland.

Look at those quaint dutch people with their customs )

I'm taking advantage of internet while I still have it. There's something wrong with my Grandparents' provider, but they are refusing to deal with it, because they seem to believe it will resolve itself. I'm not sure why, since they sporadically lose telephone service too.

But you know, they also only heat the first floor of their three-story house, so I wouldn't start using them as the control for the insanity defense.

Anyway, I've never been so bored in my entire life. Because of jet-lag I'm up at 4 and then to bed at 12, so I have all this extra time I have to fill up. I've started taking my book, Tana French's In The Woods (I asked my mother for it for Christmas on [livejournal.com profile] maypirate's recommendation), into the bathroom (the warmest room in the house) and reading in the tub.

We went downtown today because my mother and I were going to kill my grand parents if we stayed around any longer. I always get a lot of attention the minute I open my mouth, because Dutch young people are startlingly America-obsessed. A new shop opened on Langestraat since the last time I was here called "America Today 34." They had a giant picture of Christian Bale up in the window, which, cheers, but they seem to be a little confused.

But yes, lots of attention, which was fine with me, because the bartender in Hemels was this 6'4 Adonis who kept sending me iced tea (Carbonated Nestea does not actually deserve the name). But everywhere else it gets a little disconcerting.

Hope you all had a Merry Christmas!

Got my college physical today. I knew I had to get a meningitis vaccination but I ended up also getting a tetanus shot. Blech, I'm so afraid of needles. Flo sat there reading John Stewart to me so I wouldn't freak out. I probably shouldn't have driven to the city afterwards, my arm was hurting so much I wasn't paying as much attention as I should have. I'm sorry, man coming out of parking lot that I cut off and I'm not so sorry to that SUV person. You get what you get.

Flo and I went to the San Francisco Symphony's rendition of the Lord of the Rings Soundtrack. Are we geeks? Yes, I do believe we are. Although I was really pissed off that they got a Baritone to sing "Aragorn's Corronation". I thought it sounded really bad. Besides Viggo Mortenson was definitely a tenor. *headdesk* Oh, god, I'm a geek. We went to this place called Flippers for burgers before hand. Kind of silly really, burgers and then the symphony? Ah well, it was good.

Yesterday Jan, Elaine, and I went book shopping. Elaine wasn't going to buy anything but ended up with at least seven different mangas. We also reminisced about the Netherlands (that would be Jan and me, Elaine is not so interested in the netherlands), made fun of Matt, who can't for the life of him say chocolate sprinkles in dutch, ate French food (yes, Jan that Caesar salad was French too), and made lots of pervie yaoi comments having to do with white chocolate.

to whom it may concern . . .off to Connecticut for two weeks, Colleen will be joining me there, and from thence we shall take over the world. Or at least try to do so.

I bet you were thinking there wasn't going to be any Eye Candy, because it's 2:34 AM, well, you're wrong )

Last day of high school was on Friday. Baccalaureate (I imagine that's spelled horribly wrong) today. Tomorrow the influx of family members begins. Wednesday is graduation. On Saturday I'm off for the annual visit to the Netherlands--where the world cup will constantly be on the living room television. YES!

Mr. Struckmeyer had the sweetest speech at baccalaureate . . .he said he was the student that never asked anyone to a dance and I swear half the female audience went "Awwww". It's kinda funny now, because he's the HOTTEST teacher on campus. He gave me a hug today, and he had to bend so far over, I felt even shorter than usual. It already sucks that most people in my family are tall.

Damn genetics.

to whom it may concern . . .Flo, your camera rocks!

oooh, I almost forgot, the new tradition I'm starting . . .for those of us who love Velvet Goldmine )
