Fanmix: Not Made For Love

19 tracks, 92 MB Zip
Excuse my futzing about with photoshop. I'm crap at layer masks. Epically crap.
In the typical fashion of my mixes, this one tells a story. It might even be the same story as the last one. Which is that Iraq sucks, and Nate's kind of falling apart, and Brad's watching it, and so he volunteers to become Nate's dirty little secret, his shoulder to cry on (but a manful shoulder). Eventually they get out, and they both think it's going to be over. The real world's got different rules after all. But Nate comes to his senses, and makes it definitively clear that he wants Brad. In the more than just a weekend, more than just a good times lay, kind of way. And then everybody can be happy. And listen to anthemic pop songs by Ellie Goulding and Sick Puppies.
Hey, we're gonna laugh at this one day"

1. Devil's Playground: This song is about being in a bad situation. Therefore, a fitting opener.
2. You Don't Seem So Happy: And this is the part where Brad notices Nate is experiencing more than normal angst. He would be blind not to. Also the lines, "Lock the door, we can hide and plan our lives," "Someday we'll forget what we used to do," "I don't think that I can sleep again, I remember leaving things unsaid..."
3. Not Made For Love: The title track. Pretty self-explanatory. They're poor broken boys in need of saving.
4. The Sun: This had a sound that I liked more than an explanation in the lyrics. Bittersweet I think.
5. Big Jet Plane: This song makes me cry. It symbolizes Brad's attempt to make things better for Nate.
6. Nobody Knows: This is actually a song about hiding a relationship. Very similar to Barenaked Ladies. "Nobody knows you like I do / We can let them wonder / Everyone thinks they know the truth / People never understand / Better we lie."
7. Telling Lies: This one also had a sound I liked. But also, the lyrics actually encapsulate the entire series really well: "Bending backwards to look behind / Pushing forward, killing the time / You thought it would change in time /You thought it would change your mind / You thought you'd be first in line / You thought it would change your life."
8. Pretender: Nate's worried. He knows it's going to end. He doesn't want to change things between them. Brad: "But it's alright, because I feel like getting hurt."
9. Heart Attack: And now things are getting better. They've managed to find their own peace in the middle of all this crap. However, not without a reminder lurking always on the edges.
10. Slide Away: And you always need one song to describe the sex.
11. Show Me Something New: "You and I/ have a hard thing to describe/ you have so much to live for/ while I am dying just to stay alive." I don't know why I put this here. But The Shout Out Louds like The Smiths, more cheery than their lyrics would suggest. It just seemed to fit.
12. Drops In The River: I chose this because I actually needed a thematic change, because things are about to get angry and bad.
13. Love Is A Number: This band is named after the Nazi-resistance movemant during WWII, so they are pretty angry. Brad feels a little like Nate's screwed him, even though Nate warned him this would happen, "I've Just Left The House/I'm Through Making Out With My Dreams! I Feel left without/ I'm Through Making Out..."
14. Midnight Sun: And maybe other people know more than they thought.
15. This Sweet Love: Nate's paddle party. "Be, the greatest man in history / The greatest man that you can be/ Just be." He's starting to realize he's fallen in love with Brad as more than just a band-aid. But Brad's kind of not having it at this point, because Nate quit the marines.
16. Return To Me: And some time has gone by. And Brad realizes he completely slapped the hand Nate held out to him. And he wishes he could go back. I'm pretty sure this song is actually about a funeral or a death. HOWEVER, I am using it creatively.
17. Everything Is Shattering: Brad pulls his head out of his ass. He'd probably hate this song, because it's all "love will save us all." Oh well, he doesn't have to listen to it.
18. I'll Hold My Breath: "We'll stay awake beneath the trees/ We'll watch the buildings turn to dust/ A sky of diamonds just for us/ You are the risk I'll always take/ The branch I'll never break."
19. Odd One: And the reason for this one is up above. EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE!

(and I love that you added your song descriptions/"liner notes" below, I always dig seeing the fanmixer's thought processes when assembling a mix like this)

And I love the primer you included in the comments here, they really helped me to understand the flow of the songs. Outstanding!
