Vote Blue 2008
Nov. 4th, 2008 10:47 amI figured I'd start off by talking about the election. This is now the third election I've participated in. The first, Kerry Edwards 2004, I devoted roughly 30 hours a week to the cause, and was arguably the least effective. I was sixteen, couldn't vote, and lived in the state of California where it hardly mattered. Two weeks after the election, and many many tears shed, my friend gave me the armband Vote Blue 11/4/2008.
In the 2006 midterm elections, I went traipsing all over Connecticut for Joe Courtney--to take back the house and the senate--but voted absentee and once again didn't matter. But the only disappointment of that election was Joe Lieberman.
Last February, I decided enough was enough, and reregistered in Connecticut to vote for Obama in the primary. When Proposition 8 hit the ballot, my stomach dropped. And then the Connecticut Supreme Court legalized gay marriage, and the fundamentalist Christian right formulated Question 1 to ammend the Constitution and take that right away again. And I was glad to be voting in Connecticut again to ensure that Question 1 didn't pass.
I don't care what your politics are. I don't want you to go out and vote if you're going to vote for the McCain Palin ticket. I think that shows a devastatingly tenuous grasp on reality as well as a complete lack of goodwill towards mankind.
Morrissey wrote a song called "America is not the world" and while this is true, we, more than any other nation, have the power to set the tone of global politics. And we have some serious questions to ask ourselves--is the extreme gap between rich and poor acceptable? Should we still be debating evolution and abortion as a secularist government? Why do we continue to deprive our young of sex education when there is a clear link between STI transmission and unwanted pregnancy in states with abstinence only?
Chances are, by today, you've made up your mind.
