If [livejournal.com profile] cathybites gets to dork out over hockey players, I'm allowed to do it for Stanford Basketball players, especially since I included some of them in that fic. [livejournal.com profile] causeways is judging me so hard right now.

This is Anthony Goods. He's a senior and crazy hot, and also crazy insane when you let him have the ball. Right now he's carrying the team in points. Although he and Lawrence Hill are usually vying for the top spot.

He also really cracks me up. This was taken when he was a freshman.

And here, dribbling around some poor schmuck.

Here's the head coach, Johnny Dawkins. Not particularly hot per se, but he looks so much like Barack Obama I had to include him.

This is one of my brother's favorite players, Chris Hernandez. He graduated when I was a senior in high school, and trust me when I tell you, by the end of his college career he had gotten a lot better. When he first started out he was kind of silly. Although not as bad as Jason Haas.

This was one of my favorite players in middle school, Casey Jacobsen. He was so good that he got drafted straight to the NBA his junior year, but then he let it all go down the toilet and is now playing for some backwater German league that nobody has ever heard of (a direct reference in my fic). It was super annoying, because after he left, the team was kind of bereft of any real stars and then it all came to nothing. Stupid Casey.

This is Andy Fiscer, he was on the team in the early 80s, and Stanford still has a really big hard on for him, which is hilarious, because he holds the record for fouling out of the most games (I think it's 23). He stopped playing ball after college. He's dead now, but during his early 20s, he was quite a fox.

further proof

Kenny Ammann was on the team in the early 90s, just look at his sneakers in the next photo. Now he's the head coach of Concordia (and looks kind of frightening), a NAIA team.

BOOTIES OF DOOM!

Ryan Mendez had the record for a short time of most consecutive freethrows. He made 49 in a row, and so people really never wanted to foul him. In all the times I saw him play at Maples Pavillion, I never saw him miss.

And of course my favorite player of all time...

MARK "MAD DOG" MADSEN. He had a habit of flashing his mouthguard when he was excited, but he was also one of the most gracious players I've ever seen on the court.

MOUTHGUARD

Mark plays for the Timberwolves now, but he was on the Lakers for a short period of time.

Attacking Kobe Bryant

His famous mad dog dance!

The 2007-2008 Men's Team. I think the coaches are actually the best part of this photo.

The 2006-2007 Men's team. Look at the Lopez Twins in the center, looking like ABSOLUTE DORKS. If the Weasley Twins played NCAA ball that's what they'd look like. RED HAIRED HULKS.

And we can't forget the Sixth Man Club, since they are so amazing. I wish I also had a picture of the band. Stanford's Band is probably the most notorious organization on Campus. They burned down their band shack, and got reprimanded for being rude to Mormon's when Stanford played BYU. Basically they're always doing stupid stuff, but they make up for it by being really crazy and awesome.

Let us not forget the women...

Jamila Wideman. She was the shortest player on Stanford Cardinal and ever since her tenure on the team they claim that it's cursed, because Stanford always gets knocked out of the Pac-10. We'll see if it's different this year. She's now an activist lawyer in New York sporting a Sinead O'Connor hairdo. If I could find any good photos I'd post them. Before that she was the third overall draft pick for the WNBA.

Kate and Jamila were the same year, and Kate was probably one of the best women's basketball players I've ever seen. She held the all-time career scoring high until this year's Candice Wiggin broke her record.

So yeah, that is a crash course in a Lauren-skewed version of Stanford Basketball.

I admit, I hold a bit of a grudge against the Stanford women's team for crushing Maryland in the tourney, but the pictures are lovely! And I love this time of year.

I sort of stopped watching women's basketball after Jamila Wideman graduated. But I'm pretty excited about Candace!

Well, I played varsity for a short period in high school. Granted, we were terrible, so it's not like that's much.

Oh, oh, basketball is about the one sport I really love to watch (well, I also watch soccer during World Cup. And I'm kinda forced to when the goddamned Pumas are playing in MY uni and the parking lots are full of people, because I sort of have to. Friggin loud Mexicans)
But I played too, in middle school and highschool. And, god, I sucked SO bad. But it was loads of fun :)

That it is. My brothers are really serious, I guess we'll see if anything comes of that.
