It's not easy being homeless in New Haven. The shelter costs money and there's only a few streets where you don't have to fear for your life at night. Right now we're having some of the coldest weather on record in October. There's this one guy, he must be 6'4, who hobbles around with a cane that's too small for him--intelligent guy, doesn't drink or do drugs--hard to say if that's worse in that atmosphere. I never carry cash, so I never have anything to give him, but this time--because it was freezing, after telling him I didn't have anything, I walked back and said I'd be happy to treat him to a meal. All he asked for was two donuts, and he was almost afraid to go into the Starbucks.
Somehow, after spending the meager sum of $2.65 so that he could have his donuts and eat in the warmth of the store, I feel worse rather than better. In the words of John McCain, "America did not get to be the greatest nation in the world by redistributing the wealth."
