Yay, women's lib! WHY IS THIS SO FUCKING DEPRESSING!

I have to write this really annoying journal scrapbooky type thing about sex differences in speech. So far I have written entries on "pimps and hos," "the walk of shame," last names, rape, animal traits, being politically correct, sluts, chicks and dudes, J. S Mill's On Liberty, "beards," and the desire for a significant other. If you guys have ever talked with guys or girls and noticed something really awful like that asshole who lives on the floor below you and insists that "a walk of shame only applies to a woman," please tell me about it here, because I am running out of ideas. And because I'm getting too depressed to analyze all of my DVDs from a "HOW AM I BEING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST NOW" point of view.

On a happy note, I had pancakes and bacon at 11 PM, it was magical. And I'm really tempted to scrap this J2 prep school au. Actually I don't think that last bit is happy. It's just not very good. I don't know, anybody interested in betaing it when it's finished?

Dude, pick a random episode of SPN. Issues galore. Or check out feministing or shakesville for inspiration. :)

I would do SPN episodes, but I often get pissed at Dean's rhetoric, so I think it would just shove me off into a horrible rage, and then nobody in fandom would listen anyway. BEST AVOID IT I SAY. But thanks for feministing, it's been enormously helpful.

Do you remember [livejournal.com profile] sunhawk? She posted in her journal the other day about the ferret (http://theferrett.livejournal.com/1087686.html), a guy who is pushing the Open Source Boob Project.
Wherein, it is okay for guys to touch women's boobs whenever they like, basically, without being brushed off by women.

She and her friends have done a couple of posts about the project. I would think that there might be something here you could use since he claims that many of his commenters didn't understand what he was saying. :|

I actually already wrote about that, but thanks for the suggestion.

Ah, okay. Darn. Well, good luck. I can't think of anything else. :(

No worries, I just finished it.

Ooh, what did you have to say about "chicks and dudes"? I am curious!

[identity profile] dark-reaction.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a friend who calls all women chicks, but does not call all men dudes, which holds roughly the same semantic space.

Interesting! I am a purveyor of both "chick" and "dude" in roughly equal proportion, I think, although I may use "guy" more than I would use "girl". Probably because "chick", to me, feels older than "girl", whereas both "guy" and "dude" have equivalent associated ages? Hmm! It's interesting to think about!

The problem is that for any woman who goes nameless, for example the older woman who works in the admissions office, she calls that woman a chick, so it was like AAAAAAAAAAAH.

[identity profile] balefully.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I might call the older woman chick! But I would also call an older man dude, so I am at least equal-opportunity labeler.
