I don't think Simon is the type to freak out over something that someone says about him, unless it's Mal. Actually not even then. You notice when Mal punches him that Simon never even tries to retalliate, he just picks himself up and stares at Mal like he's an uncouth brute. Excepting of course, the movie, in which he hit Mal first.
