I am weak. I did indeed buy eye shadow. Two shades of MAC. There are times where I want to do a vocational challenge for fandom. Where we had a list of jobs, I love movie AUs, but there's a whole lot more freedom if you're starting from JARED AS ADVERTISING EXEC, JENSEN AS ROMANCE NOVEL COPY EDITOR.

Or, cough, Dean as a romance novel copy editor. I wonder if I poke [livejournal.com profile] azephirin hard enough, will she write it for me?

In TV shows (not Supernatural, I don't want to start a smackdown here) who are your favorite female characters? [livejournal.com profile] cerberos has pointed out that empathetic spiritual women and I never get along. Like I love Cuddy from House, Brennan from Bones, Jo from Eureka, and Zoe from Firefly, but Inara? We are not friends.

I ask, because I wonder if there are any traits that always make you root for a character. I know that Starbuck is a fave. Personally I feel like my own pattern comes from Ryooko from Tenchi Muyo! CYBERNETIC SPACEPIRATE WITH CABBIT SPACESHIP? What's not to love.

Also, for those that ask, yes I have indeed written analogues of Flack into two separate original works now. It's the eyes. And I tell [livejournal.com profile] ericaplease I'm not that obsessed!

I have only seen season 1 of Life, but how does her character change?

She starts wearing her hair down, and curled, and wears heels for police work. What I loved about her before was that she was a woman who was practical instead of pretty, and at the same time she still managed to be really sexy. It seems the producers or someone wanted to "sex her up", so now she's yet another "ass-kicking" police-woman who runs around in high heels. I want to give her a scrunchie for her hair!

She is, on the whole, less badass.

Crews buys her underwear.

Wait.

That came out wrong.

Crews buys her underwear and IT'S THE CUTEST THING EVER.

I don't understand how one show can have so much win and so much fail all at once. *shrug*

I feel this way in real life.

My favorite female characters are usually a little angry and a lot unapologetic.

Ahahaha. I don't know what I'd do if I met a lot of girls like that in real life. Probably act like an asshole.

I like bitches. Or characters who tend to be tagged with that title, even if they're simply more...outspoken and unwavering to bend on who they are. Like: I used to love Shannon on Lost, I adore Blair (who has plenty of insecurities, sure, but she still appears confident) & I agree about Jo - she's so bad ass and seemingly cold, but totally not. I adored Inara, myself, but. That possibly has more to do with pretty than anything else. {totally not true - she could hold her own against Mal except for how he totally made her weak in the knees}

Really, I think it's more that I loathe characters who are all woe-is-me, simpering about, trying to make sense of it all and burden their friends (and the viewer) with their lack of confidence. I'm thinking Meredith Grey, but. She just completely sucks, so.

Well, it's not that she wasn't strong, it was everything else. On the Jungian scale she'd be a feeler and I'd be a thinker. I feel like her edge only came from being a prostitute and the rest was oozing in worldly compassion.

BLEH. Not my cup of tea. The simpering, oh the simpering. Julia on Nip/Tuck. I mean she makes me want to throw things.

I also hate the simpering female. Or, like Dana from Sports Night, who comes up with the crazy dating plan and everyone is like "well," *shrug* "she's a woman." WE ARE NOT ALL SO NONSENSICAL.

I love Scully, I love Veronica Mars. I love CJ from West Wing and Rory from later seasons of Gilmore. Not when she was leaving perfect Dean for Jess, the boy who treats her bad. So, I think I'm with you on liking women with some bite to them, who don't just turn over and let things happen.

Yes, that really sucks. CJ! How could I forget about her. Probably because when I think of that show I don't get much farther past SAM SEABORN, HOMG!

Oooo, original fics with a Flack-like personage? I like.

Also, I'm crazy about Parker from LEVERAGE. She's a hoot. She's got mad skills as a thief, and was clearly raised by wolves. I totally adore her.

I like female characters who don't define themselves only about their relationships with/to men, who don't act seductive the whole time, who have qualities/characteristics that don't have anything to do with their sexuality/attractiveness. Also, I have a soft spot for the slightly crazy ones.

I liked River from Firefly - and Zoe, although, even if she's really cool, I can't identify with her very well; I like Parker from Leverage; Megan from Numb3rs; I adored Claire in Six Feet under, and I love Sarah in Brothers & Sisters. Tosh in Torchwood is not bad, either. In Grey's Anatomy, I liked Christina and Miranda Bailey.
Actually, as different as the shows are, an important reason why I liked Firefly and Grey's Anatomy was that I thought they had really interesting, multidimensional female characters, which unfortunately doesn't go without saying.

Characters I really don't like: Meredith from Grey's Anatomy, Inara from Firefly, Amita (and Liz) from Numb3rs ...

Hard to identify with Zoe, but also easy to laugh along with her when she's making the captain seem a bit dopey.

CJ from The West Wing.
Zoe from Firefly.
I've only seen 4 eps of Grey's Anatomy before I realized how much I hated the show -- but I liked what I saw of Dr. Bailey in those.
Starbuck and Athena from BSG.
Atia from Rome.
Claire from Six Feet Under.
Veronica Mars.
Parker on Leverage, although I'm not 100% decided about the show yet.
Scully. I don't really have fandom icons outside of SPN right now, but I think I need me some Scully icons. Definitely.
Overall, I tend to like female characters who are confident, ambitious, angry, even -- the ones who make things happen and are completely unapologetic about it.

I'm kinda amused by his character, but the hair. IT HAS TO GO. I don't know who told him it looks good -- it looks like it's taking over his head and later, the world. I liked early Lindsey hair. The current thing's way too much.

Well, if I weren't like THE LAST PERSON YOU'D WANT TO HOLD A CHALLENGE, I would totally make it happen. Oh man, what a list of jobs we could come up with--high school teacher, forensic scientist, social worker, mob enforcer, artist, politician, psychiatrist, MEDIEVALIST!

Weeeeell, how about we come up with an awesome list, and then maybe I'll look at appropriate dates to hold a challenge a bit later on this year. Say, post BB? *g*

I really, really like this idea. I think it'd be a really neat way to approach AUs -- less "I have this story I want to adapt, whether it works or not", and more like -- Character X might seem an unlikely candidate for linguistics expert, but this is how he/she would react given the circumstances.

Yes, I mean obviously I'd like to put the fairly typical jobs up for grabs as well, but I think it could be a really cool thing if they were mostly roles that Jared/Jensen or Sam/Dean haven't starred in, already.

But, come on, Jensen as a chimney sweep? With the artful smudge of soot over his cheekbone?
Honestly, I don't know if there are still ribbon candy pullers or if the process is fully mechanized these days. But it would so be a Jared-job, regardless!

Nobody said the fic had to be set in the present! Other possible occupations now opened up...centurion, pirate, cobbler, master huntsman, black smith, fresco painter...

JDM as the fresco painter -- older, well known, as respected as really an artist can be given his occupation -- with younger apprentices including Jared and Jensen, to mix his paints and grind pigments and do most of the grunt work -- all kind of vying for the same favored spot and a shot to be the master, someday. Or -- no, similar setup, with JDM as the painter, and Jared as one of the apprentices, and Jensen's family commissioning a portrait of him. Which JDM for some reason can't do (or does do) and Jared has the audacity to do it, instead (also).

This challenge totally needs to happen. *nod nod*

Bwahahahahaha. I can pull off some wacky AUs (Sam for president!), but I'm not sure I could pull that one off. Although I can actually sort of see Dean writing them and Sam copyediting them, both in secret, and then Sam getting one of Dean's manuscripts. :P
